Which eero router is best? eero 6 vs 6+ vs Pro 6E vs eero 7

For more than ten years now, eero has been steadily releasing a stream of great routers for your home broadband. Founded by pioneering entrepreneur Nick Weaver, the tech company had humble beginnings in a small San Francisco apartment. They quickly built their reputation as one of the most powerful Wi-Fi systems in the world and were bought by Amazon in 2019.

Since then, they’ve released eleven new routers, across two different series. But with so many recent models on the market, it’s understandable that less tech-savvy consumers might feel slightly overwhelmed when making a choice.

Understanding eero’s journey, and what each model adds, is the best way to find the perfect router for your home.

eero 6s

Between 2020 and 2023, eero released the eero 6 series. Broadly speaking, all models share the following features:

  • Wi-Fi standard 6

  • Dual-band connectivity (2.4GHz + 5GHz)

  • Supporting up to 75 devices at one time

  • Backwards compatibility with older devices

  • Built-in mesh capability

But there’s also some key differences between each router:

1. The eero 6

The first of the series, the eero 6, was a solid entry point for consumers looking to adopt Wi-Fi 6 and early smart home technology, without any premium extras. It offered:

  • Speeds up to 900 Mbps

  • Coverage up to 1,500 sq ft

2. The eero 6+

Shortly after, the eero 6+ built on its predecessor by adding an extra 160MHz radio channel, widening the bandwidth and increasing speeds. It also meant it could reliably handle a full 1 Gbps connection - making it an exciting choice for homes looking to embrace gigabit broadband.

3. The eero Pro 6

Next came the Pro 6 – the first to offer eero’s ‘Tri-band’ feature. This upped the ante by including two 5GHz bands for a stronger mesh backhaul and even faster speeds for devices. On top of this, it offered wider coverage than ever before - up to 2000 sq ft. This made it ideal for larger households with heavier usage.

The eero PRO 6E

Not long after, the eero Pro 6E was released as an extension of the 6 series. At the time, it was eero’s most advanced Wi-Fi system yet, giving consumers:

  • The improved Wi-Fi 6 standard, 6E

  • 2,000 sq ft coverage

  • Tri-band connectivity (2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz)

  • Connection of up to 100+ devices

  • The ability to enjoy gigabit+ speeds

Its key selling point was the added 6GHz band, which significantly reduced congestion in device-heavy environments. This was a much-needed upgrade in the wake of the pandemic, when homes rapidly became busier, smarter and more connection reliant.

The eero 7s

But Wi-Fi didn’t stop there… and eero didn’t either. In a game-changing moment for home Wi-Fi, the 7 series introduced the possibility of multi-gigabit speeds to eero customers for the first time. All eero 7 models offer:

  • The latest, Wi-Fi standard 7: Faster throughput and lower latency

  • Multi-Link Operation (MLO): A brand-new feature that uses multiple bands for greater stability, at all times

  • The most up-to-date security: Using the latest security protocols like WPA3

  • Simplified app management: A user-friendly portal with easy setup for customers

  • Built-in mesh capability: The option to add more routers and improve coverage across the home

But beyond this, each model has its own strengths…

What is eero mesh?

Eero 7 Add-on

Mesh is a truly revolutionary Wi-Fi technology that enables multiple routers to chain together and extend coverage.

And what makes eero so central in the story of mesh is they were genuinely one of the first to make it widely available for home users. Not something to be sniffed at!

Before eero, households could use Wi-Fi extenders to stretch their signal. But eero’s intelligent TrueMesh system was trailblazing, allowing multiple routers to string together as a single network for stronger and more consistent coverage across the entire home. It even proactively reroutes if any router in the chain drops for seamless coverage.

How does TrueMesh work?

It helps to think of traditional Wi-Fi like a single power plant powering an entire city. If something goes wrong, or demand surges, there are blackouts.

Instead, TrueMesh is like an intelligent electric grid, with multiple power plants and substations all connected. If one fails, or a particular area needs more power, the system reroutes the electricity accordingly and ensures steady, reliable supply for all areas. No more blackouts or dead zones – just reliable and strong coverage, everywhere you need!
