Surprise Price Rise Ban
20th January 2025

At LightSpeed, we pride ourselves on offering fair contract terms and putting our customers first. That’s why we’re delighted to welcome the introduction of Ofcom’s ban on surprise, mid-contract price rises, which comes into force today.
Typically, these mid-contract price rises have been linked to official inflation figures (the Retail Price Index, or ‘RPI’). Since inflation fluctuates, customers are prevented from knowing in advance what their total contract cost will be. As of April 2024, around six in 10 UK contracts included a mid-contract rise, with six of the largest providers adding a further 3.9% price increase on top of the official RPI increase. An investigation also revealed that over the last 18 months, mid-contract increases had, for some customers, amounted to over 17%.
From today, inflation can no longer be used to calculate prices. Instead, all firms that wish to make mid-contract price increases must set out in advance and in clear monetary terms how much the increase will be and when it will take place. This will help customers make informed decisions about their provider, allowing them to buy the service they need for a price they can afford.
Since connecting our very first customer to our full-fibre network, we have committed to acting fairly and with full price transparency. We don’t increase our prices mid-contract, meaning LightSpeed customers can be 100% sure what the basic costs of their service will be throughout the contract term. No rises. No surprises.
With other household bills increasing, we know that our customers welcome and value the cost certainty we offer.
