Wi-Fi Mesh – ironing out your broadband dead-spots

24th December 2024

Why might my router’s Wi-Fi signal not be able to cover every room?

There can be a few reasons for this. But here are the two most common:

  1. Your home may be larger than average or perhaps spread out over several floors. You might even have a loft conversion that is some distance away from your router, making it hard to reach.

  2. Your home’s construction may make it tricky for the signal to travel through it, for example if some of the walls are particularly thick.

Either way, Wi-Fi mesh are an ideal way to help you to get the signal exactly where it’s needed.

What is Wi-Fi mesh?
Wi-Fi mesh, sometimes called repeaters or range extenders, are small electronic devices that capture, amplify and extend the signal coming from your router. Think of them as a bridge between your router and the devices in your home, giving you stable and seamless connectivity, and ensuring you get the speed you’re paying for. A quick note though – while Wi-Fi mesh can carry your router’s signal much further, what they can’t do is speed it up. For that you’ll need to upgrade your package, for example one of LightSpeed’s ultra-fast full fibre connections.

Will my current Wi-Fi set-up work with Wi-Fi mesh?
Almost certainly, yes. Most of the mesh that are available today are compatible with any standard Wi-Fi router, and with most devices that support wireless connectivity. They also use the same Wi-Fi frequency band as the router, 5 GHz, and can feed a range of devices at the same time.

Mesh Wi-Fi systems
The most effective way to create strong, consistent coverage across your home is with a mesh system. These comprise multiple Wi-Fi access points that work together to create an overlapping wireless network. Each device acts as a Wi-Fi mesh. By working together they will  automatically and seamlessly connect you to the strongest signal in any given part of the house if you are moving from room to room.

Getting the set-up right
As a LightSpeed customer, your engineer can advise you if you’d benefit from mesh Wi-Fi as part of your Home Setup Appointment, and can carry out the installation for you if necessary.

If you are setting up your own system, getting it up and running is usually quick and easy, and won’t need any drilling or installation of cabling. The real art of getting the right coverage is picking the right part of your home for the beacons.

They’ll need to be close enough to the router to get its signal, but also near enough to the place where you’re trying to extend the coverage. Plus, because they need a power supply, they’ll need to be near to a socket. The associated app will help you find the best location for your Wi-Fi mesh.

Finally, it’s worth a bit of ‘trial and error’ to find the optimal place, and to make sure that the beacon isn’t being obstructed by things like large metal objects that might block its signal.

Fit and forget
The great thing about range extenders is that once they are installed and you’ve found the best place for them, you can leave them to run quietly and discreetly in the background, and forget they’re even there.
